New American business owners graduating with college certification

On Monday, June 12, 2006 at 6:00 pm. AnewAmerica will hold its fifth annual graduation at Holy Names University, Regents Theater, at 3500 Mountain Boulevard, Oakland.  The 38 graduates, 58% women, will be receiving their business planning certificates after completing the 25 week business incubation program.  Food and beverages will be provided.

The two featured guest speakers are Darien Louie, the Wells Fargo Community Development Officer of the Greater Bay Area, and Mark Quinn, District Director of the Small Business Administration’s San Francisco District.  AnewAmerica’s president and CEO, Sylvia Rosales-Fike, and the vice president of Academic Affairs of Holy Names University, Dr. Lizbeth Martin, will be presenting the certificates and will recognize AnewAmerica volunteers, business coaches and guest speakers. According to Jeff Butler, AnewAmerica’s Business Incubation Program Manager “The graduation ceremony is a great opportunity to celebrate our clients’ achievements and thank all those who support them in their efforts.”

This graduation is the first benchmark the graduates achieved while launching or expanding their small businesses as members of AnewAmerica business incubation program. AnewAmerica has partnered with Holy Names University of Oakland for the business planning certificate entrepreneurs earned after meeting all program requirements. This is the first of a kind program in the country aimed to low-income new Americans.

Assets for New Americans: The Virtual Business Incubator (Assets-VBI) model is made up of three key elements—business incubation, asset building and social responsibility—integrated throughout the three year of services. Assets-VBI is a strategic and comprehensive approach based on an asset-building agenda that works with underserved new American populations to “access the system” and actively plan and implement long-range economic and social empowerment goals. Over the three years of participation in the program, families receive group training and customized individualized coaching and technical assistance to gain education and access to resources.

Founded in 1999 by community leaders, AnewAmerica is a vehicle to combat the continuing lack of integrated job creation, asset development, and community empowerment strategies for low-income new Americans living in California.  AnewAmerica addresses this need by assisting low-income working families new Americans to access the system.  New American families are often operating in an informal system that poses risks to their personal interests and to the larger community.  By helping them to learn and use the system through our public, business and financial institutions, bridges are established to enable their economic and social development.  Since the year 2000, AnewAmerica has served 1165 individuals. The community development benefits of our program include the creation of over 111 jobs in the California workforce and 86 clients or 46% the total number of participants are active in social responsibility.

AnewAmerica serves the population residing or working in nine counties of the greater Bay Area of California including San Francisco, East Bay and San Jose metropolitan regions. Offices are located in San Francisco, Oakland, San José, Berkeley and an additional office is scheduled to open in Richmond later this year. Their client base is primarily Latino and Asian, but also serve African, Eastern European and Middle Eastern families. AnewAmerica’s business training program is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Women’s Business Ownership, Wells Fargo, Washington Mutual,  Citibank, Walter & Elise Haas Fund, Zellerbach Foundation, East Bay Community Foundation and other institutions and individuals.
