On November 3rd at the Holy Redeemer
Center in Oakland, over 300 friends gathered to enjoy festive
entertainment and cuisine in honor of AnewAmerica's entrepreneurs and
Community Angel Awardees. Funds raised by this event are to
support economically disadvantaged new American entrepreneurs and their
families. The
annual gala celebrates new Americans and the work that
AnewAmerica and others have done in helping to further the
endeavor.
This
celebration of entrepreneurship, community and culture included speakers
Sr. Linda Orrick, AnewAmerica Board Chair; Maggie Kaplan, WBC Advisory
Board Chair; Mauricio Galan of Citibank; Lola Robinson of the U.S. Small
Business Administration and Celina Rodriguez, Telemundo, as the Master
of Ceremonies.

thanks to our event sponsors this year: Citibank, Maggie Kaplan, LeFetra

Every year at the
gala, AnewAmerica recognizes amazing individuals in
government and the business community who have greatly contributed to the
well-being of low-income and minority new Americans in the area.
This year's recipients of the AnewAmerica Community Angel Award included
Oakland City Council President, Ignacio De La Fuente; Deputy District
Director, U.S. Small Business Administration, Darlene McKinnon; and
President, Vietnamese Community Development, Inc., Trung Nguyen.
This year,
for the first time, AnewAmerica also established the Entrepreneur of
the Year Award. The first place prize, a $700 check presented
by Citibank, went to Delia Suarez, owner of Delia's Little Angels.
The second place prize, a $300 check presented by Union Bank, went to
Lourdes Rodriguez, owner of Lourdes' Linens. A third prize, a
certificate of recognition went to the Emerging Entrepreneur of the
