New Americans to Host Social Responsibility Summit Berkeley, CA – On Saturday, August 27th, 2005, AnewAmerica will host the Fourth Annual Social Responsibility Summit & our first Community Business Exposition. Our clients are new Americans – immigrants, refugees, and new citizens – learning successful strategies to build their wealth by developing their own microenterprise businesses. The Social Responsibility Summit will be held at Fruitvale Village, 3301 East 12th Street, Second Floor, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Fruitvale Village is located across from the Fruitvale BART station. The event will feature workshops and trainings focusing on Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Advocacy for Small Business, Lead Poison Prevention, Production and Security in our Food System, and Fair Public Housing. In addition, our entrepreneurs will showcase their products and services at our first Community Business Exposition. AnewAmerica’s Assets for New Americans is the only program in the nation that provides women entrepreneurs and their families up to three years of support in business planning, business training, business coaching, university credentials, technology literacy, financial management, savings incentives (including a 2:1 match on deposits), community networks, and access to markets and capital, all within a framework of social responsibility. We link Business Incubation with Asset Building and Social Responsibility to craft an effective anti-poverty strategy that is responsive to the complex needs of new American women and their families in gaining their economic independence, achieving a better standard of living and ending their disenfranchisement. The Social Responsibility Summit is a forum for clients to learn about community issues, advocate for change, and strengthen community ties. “Hear we are…having so much fun and seeing our dream becoming true. We are even working for our rights, too. In spring we got to visit Senator Liz Figueroa in Sacramento. We just hope they listen to us, the new Americans, too.” - Lourdes Rodriguez, AnewAmerica client AnewAmerica Community Corporation was founded in 1999 by a group of community leaders representing immigrants and community development advocates who saw a continuing lack of integrated job creation, asset development, and community empowerment strategies for low-income new Americans living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since our inception, AnewAmerica has served over 1300 individuals and has helped our clients successfully launch 24 new microbusinesses, 30 business expansions, and create new jobs for 65 new Americans.
