Immigrant Entrepreneurs Convene Social Responsibility Summit Berkeley, CA – AnewAmerica Community Corporation and its Social Responsibility Committee are hosting an on-point education event to teach each other and the community the finer points of community advocacy and empowerment. This 3rd Annual Social Responsibility Summit will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2004 at the Women’s Building at 3543 18th Street in San Francisco. The Social Responsibility Committee is made up of entrepreneurs and graduates of AnewAmerica’s Virtual Business Incubator and asset-building program. Participants receive three years of support in business training and financial planning for long-term economic sustainability. They are also required to learn about civic participation and ways to give back to their community. Speakers at the event include RightBrainLeft’s Deonne Kahler, Alameda County Green Business Association’s Pamela Evans and representatives of Mujeres Unidas y Activas. Topics include social conscious in business and environmentalism. Speakers will be followed by small group presentations on National Immigrants Rights Issues, Health and Environment, Issues Affecting Small Entrepreneurs, and more. Presenting groups include the Latina Center, the California Association for Microenterprise Opportunity (CAMEO), the California Immigrant Welfare Collaboration (CIWC) and the Agriculture and Land-Based training Association (ALBA). Also, for the first time, AnewAmerica will be presenting a local social responsibility advocate the Community Spirit Award. Although presented by AnewAmerica, winners of this award are selected by the community. Immigrant and long-time community advocate Clara Luz Navaro will be this year’s recipient. Navaro is being recognized for her work advocating the rights of immigrants and women. This event is co-sponsored by Mujeres Unidas y Activas, the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrants Rights, the Central America Resource Center (CARECEN), Padres Unidas and the Latina Center. AnewAmerica Community Corporation was founded in 1999 by a group of community leaders representing immigrants and community development advocates who saw a continuing lack of integrated job creation, asset development, and community empowerment strategies for low-income new Americans living in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2003, AnewAmerica activities assisted in the creation of 28 new microbusinesses, 14 business expansions and 42 new jobs. |
