AnewAmerica Volunteer Manager Wins AEO Scholarship
AnewAmerica is pleased to announce Mimi Nguyen, Outreach & Volunteer Manager, has been chosen as a recipient of the Maria Padilla-Orasel Scholarship offered by the Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO), the national trade association for organizations dedicated to creating opportunities for U.S. entrepreneurs. The scholarship, worth $1000, gives minority women the opportunity to attend the AEO 2004 Annual Microenterprise Conference in Philadelphia, PA. Maria Padilla-Orasel, a well-respected individual in the microenterprise development field, was committed to creating leadership opportunities for minority women. Nguyen has been involved with AnewAmerica only for a short time, but she has already shown her extreme dedication to microenterprise development field. "I'm so glad that I get the opportunity to learn and to represent AnewAmerica at the AEO conference," said Nguyen. The microenterprise development field is composed of over 700 nonprofit organization assisting enterprenerus to achieve the goal of self-employment. The organizations provide services such as business training, access to start-up capital and technical assistance. AnewAmerica's primary focus is on providing this sort of training and asset development assistance to new Americans -- refugees, immigrants and new citizens. Microenterprises are businesses with fewer than five employees and capital needs of less than $35,000 a year. According to AEO, there are a total of 20,746,076 such operations in the U.S. and 16.6% of all private (non-farm) employment is provided by them. |
